About the Project

The Bustan Nassif area is located in the protected UNESCO World Heritage Site of Baalbek, and is bordered from the North East by the renowned Bacchus Temple. The excavations carried out by the Directorate General of Antiquities during the 1960s and the 1970s, revealed the presence of large medieval structures, the scientific study and re-examination of which was launched in 2008 by the German Archeological Institute. The aim was to expose and study the structures, providing by that a clearer and wider historical understanding of the area during the medieval period.

After excavation, the structures, now exposed, became more susceptible to weathering and therefore more vulnerable. The decision was then made to insure a proper conservation and restoration project, protecting the site and presenting it to the public.

The multi-disciplinary project in which we collaborated and site supervised aimed at the implementation of the studied conservation and presentation project into the archaeological site. The works covered a 10,000sqm area which includes the Medieval City Gate, its Mosque, Khan, Hammam, and all its surrounding dwellings.
