Baalbek's Medieval Archaeological Site

The Bustan Nassif area is located in the protected UNESCO World Heritage Site of Baalbek, bordered to the North East by the renowned Bacchus Temple. Excavations carried out by the Directorate General of Antiquities during the 1960s and 1970s revealed large medieval structures, whose scientific study and re-examination was launched in 2008 by the German Archaeological Institute, aiming to expose and study the structures for a clearer historical understanding of the medieval period. After excavation, the now-exposed structures became more susceptible to weathering and vulnerability, prompting a proper conservation and restoration project to protect the site and present it to the public. The multi-disciplinary project, in which we collaborated and conducted site supervision, implemented the studied conservation and presentation project across a 10,000 sqm area including the Medieval City Gate, its Mosque, Khan, Hammam, and all surrounding dwellings.
